Happy Get Caught Reading Month. With the sun shining bright and the cool and refreshing breeze blowing through the pages, there is no better time to read in the outdoors. Luckily, Boston offers incredible locations for all types of readers out there. So, grab a book, head outside, and the city will do the rest for you!

What is Get Caught Reading Month?

Launched by the Association of American Publishers, Get Caught Reading Month has one goal: to remind everyone how fun it is to read. This is one of these hobbies which knows no age limits. Don’t worry if you haven’t read in a while. It’s always a good day to pick up a book.

Here are some amazing places around the city to get comfy and get your reading on.

1. Boston Common

It’s that beautiful time of the year when Boston Common truly comes alive in all its glory. You can sit on a bench or find a good spot in the grass to lie down and read. A squirrel might approach and ask for a summary, so make sure you don’t get distracted by your book – although we totally understand sneaking in a little daytime nap in the park to relax!

Reading Tip: if you visit the Common during lunchtime and head to the Brewer Fountain Plaza, you can read and enjoy live piano performances thanks to the Friends of the Public Garden.

2. Public Garden

Looking to stay away from distractions or prefer a deeper connection with nature? Welcome to the Public Garden. No bicycles are allowed, and dogs must be on a leash.  If you’re the type of person who loves a calm ambiance, this is the place to be. The cherry blossoms, perennials, and roses make for stunning companions to be around as you discover your favorite literary worlds.

Reading Tip: if you’d like to pause your reading, take a second to enjoy the breathtaking nature and city views. Better yet, hop on the Swan Boats – a must-do local experience – for a 12–15-minute ride in the Public Garden lagoon before diving back into your book.

3. Charles River Esplanade

Are you a foodie and book lover? Do you prefer a dynamic space while reading? Look no further than the Charles River Esplanade. The trail along the river has many benches where you can relax and read your favorite book. The Esplanade feels like a natural oasis in the middle of the city. If you prefer to sit on the grass, the magnificent trees will cast a soothing shadow over you. When you get tired of reading, take a walk along the trail and soak in the beauty of the river landscape.

Reading Tip: pack a picnic. The Esplanade has tables where you can sit back, enjoy a book, and snack on delicious food.

4. Fan Pier Park

If you’re looking for a unique reading experience and want to catch a glimpse of the stunning Boston skyline, Fan Pier Park is a great choice. Located in the Seaport District, Fan Pier Park offers a nice space to experience some tranquility by the water in Boston Harbor. Many benches, tables, and stairs all provide spaces to read, and the sounds of the water will make you lose track of time as you enjoy your book.

Reading Tip: every evening, there is a stone fire pit that you can sit around to enjoy as you read. Once you have finished your book, you can head out to explore the numerous dining options that the Seaport has to offer.
